The second Somaliland local council’s elections
On the 28th November 2012, Somaliland went through a historic-day that will be remembered in its history. On that day, the Somalilanders went to the polling stations to elect their local government council members who will be responsible of running the local municipalities of each and every district in the country.
Major Somaliland districts/towns that will elect their own local council members
The people of 21 somaliland districts, among them; Hargeisa, Borama, Baki, Seylac, Lawyacado, Bulaxar, Geiblay, Arabsiyo, Wajale, Baligubadleh, Salahley, Da’arbudhuq, Berbera, Sheikh, Burao, Odweyne, Cainabo, Las-Anod, Cerigavo, El-afweyn, Gar-adag and their surrounding villages plus went to the polling stations to vote and elect their local council members who will rule them in the next upcoming five years.
The transportation between the districts/towns and within each town is reduced to avoid both motivations for election irregularities and accidents.
The long lines of people, queues were been seen on the streets of each districts. Queues of men and women, both young and old were standing under the sun waiting to reach the registration tables and ballot boxes so that they will cast their vote to the person they want to elect.
What was amazing also was in these queues the people who were standing were voting for the different candidates and they knew themselves, but no violence and quarrels erupted in the long lines of the voting stations.
Can we then say that Somalilnaders have improved their way of thinking?
I am sure that this will not happen in Somalia or in Puntland even in the coming years?
The election started at 6:00 Am (on that day) this morning and finished in the evening around 6:00 PM or if the queues persist around 8:00 PM, as scheduled by the national electoral commission of Somaliland known as NEC.
There were more than two thousand six hundreds local council candidates all over the country from seven political parties (namely: Kulmiye, Dalsan, Rays, Ucid, Xaqsor, Umada and Waddani) while only three hundred and thirty seven will qualify as the won elected-local council members. But what is also interesting is that this election is not only about the winning of the candidates but also only three out of the seven contesting political parties or organizations will either qualify as national political parties.
In the last one month, from the end of October up-to the 26 November there has been an extensive campaign of advertisement conducted by the candidates and the political parties or organizations which went on well in all over the regions and districts.
Somaliland, a role model for the countries in the region
Therefore this is the fifth democratic election that Somaliland has conducted since 2002, and the second Local council’s election, after Somaliland transformed itself from single-party country to multiple party country and all of them completed successfully and without violence.
In east Africa, Somaliland is one of the few countries that have exercised to transform their governing system from single-party system to the multiple party system where the government of both local and central as well as the legislation bodies comes from public election, where the public vote for the person they want to be their representative at all those different levels.
Election Weak-points:
So far this election is ongoing well. But there are two major weak points that will make it not 100% fit
The first point is that people will vote without registration, while the second one is that some people will vote multiply. Despite these two weaknesses the election has gone well.
Finally I am proud that my small internationally unrecognized country. And lets us wait to hear both the elected candidates and elected parties.
